Eye Makeup Tips

Applying eye makeup can be a tricky task at best. Knowing the right colors, how to apply it and where the proper shades should go are important factors to getting the right look when applying eye makeup. To start, be sure that you have all of the proper tools to correctly apply eye makeup.

Be sure that the eye area is clean of any old makeup and/or oil and dirt. Then, apply a light dusting of face powder over the eyelids to ensure the shadows stay on longer and retain their vibrancy. This will also assist in the process of applying mascara towards the end of the process.

Start with the eye shadow. One thing to remember is that eye color, as well as clothing choices, has an impact on the color of eye shadow chosen. The time of year and the time of day matters as well. People with dark colored eyes (browns, blacks and light browns) should choose shadows that complement the color of the eyes. This means stay away from neutral colors like tans, browns, yellow, etc. These colors work best on people with blue, green, hazel and other light colored eyes. Those with brown and darker should consider brighter colors like greens, blues, lavenders colors that will stand out more.

When beginning with eye shadow application, choose three different shades. A light shade for the highlight, the darker shade to contour the eye and the medium shade to act as the base. Start by applying the medium shade, or base. Sweep it lightly over the entire eye, preferably using a large brush, such as those used to apply blush. This assures even coverage. After applying the medium shade, then apply the darker shade, or the contour. This is what is going to give the eye lid definition, so apply it generously to give the eye lids depth. Finally, apply the lightest shadow, the highlight, close to the eye brow.

After the eye shadow is complete, it’s time to move on to applying eyeliner. It’s best in this case, unless you are a professional, to go with a kohl eyeliner pencil. Liquid liners can be difficult and are only, truly applied correctly after lots and lots of practice. Start by lining the top lid. Take the pencil and as close to the eyelash line as possible, draw a line from the tip of the eyelid all the way over to the end of the eye. Repeat this on the other eye. Look closely to be sure that the two lines are of the same thickness. When lining the bottom rim, start below the lash line and make this a much smaller, subtler line, as you don’t want to compete with the top line.

Finally, you are ready to apply the finishing touches with a nice, volumnizing mascara. Choose a shade that complements the shadows and color of your eyes. Start by taking the mascara wand and brushing the first coat from the root of the lashes to the top, while looking up. Then, apply the mascara to the tips of the lashes and move the wand from side to side to evenly distribute the mascara. Be sure to give it a minute to completely dry.

Follow these simple tips to assure that your eye makeup complements your features. In doing so, you will ensure that your eye make up leaves you looking and feeling your best as you head out the door for that big meeting or that night out on the town. Confidence is key and looking your best is the first part to reaching your potential as your most confident self.
